Historical Background
The jian is a double-edged straight sword used in China for over 2,500 years. The earliest specimens date to the 7th century BCE during the Spring and Autumn period. Historical one-handed versions have blades from 45 to 80 cm (18 to 31 inches) in length, typically weighing 700-900 grams (1.5-2 pounds).
In Chinese folklore, it's known as "The Gentleman of Weapons" and is considered one of the four major weapons, along with the Gun (staff), Qiang (spear), and the Dao (sabre).
