Wakizashi

The wakizashi (脇差) was a traditional Japanese short sword (30–60cm) carried alongside the katana during the Edo period. Serving as a backup weapon for indoor combat, it also symbolized samurai status in the daisho (matched pair). Unlike the tanto, its curved blade allowed both slashing and thrusting. Used in seppuku rituals and close-quarters fights, it balanced practicality and honor.
