Historical Background
The jian is a double-edged straight sword used in China for over 2,500 years, with the earliest mentions dating to the 7th century BCE during the Spring and Autumn period (exemplified by the Sword of Goujian).
Historical one-handed versions feature blades from 45 to 80 cm (18 to 31 inches), typically weighing 700-900 grams (1.5-2 pounds) for a 70cm blade. Larger two-handed versions are used for martial arts training.
In Chinese tradition, the jian is revered as "The Gentleman of Weapons" - one of the four major weapons alongside the Gun (staff), Qiang (spear), and Dao (sabre). Professional practitioners are called jianke ("sword guests"), a term originating in the Han dynasty.
