Tanto

The tanto (短刀), meaning "short sword," dates back to Japan's Heian period (794–1185). Initially a backup weapon for samurai, its 15–30cm blade was designed for piercing armor in close combat. Unlike the decorative kaiken (women's dagger), combat tanto had sturdy, straight blades. It played a key role in seppuku (ritual suicide) and evolved alongside the katana.
