Broadsword

Developed during the Ming Dynasty, the kuodao ("broad knife") was a heavy, single-edged blade used by infantry for powerful slashing attacks. Its wide design (resembling a machete) could cleave through light armor and shields, while the thick spine added durability. Unlike elegant jian swords, it prioritized brute force in close combat. Still used in some kung fu styles today, it represents China’s no-nonsense battlefield heritage.
